DREW XANTHOPOULOS - Cinematographer

Drew Xanthopoulos is an Austin-based filmmaker and cinematographer. His award-winning documentary short, Western Brothers’ Adventure Story, has screened internationally, including at the first annual Vimeo Awards + Festival in NYC, and is used by youth education programs such as The Young Storytellers Foundation in Los Angeles and the Vimeo Video School. His experimental western, The Finalé, which he also shot, was nominated for the 2011 American Society of Cinematographers’ Student Heritage Award. Drew regularly freelances as a documentary, narrative, and commercial cinematographer and has lectured at the University of Texas at Austin.

As a documentary and narrative cinematographer, his projects have premiered at the Sundance Film Festival (Hellion, dir. Kat Candler), SXSW Film Festival (An Unreal Dream, dir. Al Reinert), Edinburgh International Film Festival (to be announced publicly Summer 2013), and many others. He’s been fortunate to have shot in Tibet, Taiwan,  and throughout Europe and the United States. His commercial clients have included Dell, Verizon, Metro PCS, Tillamook Cheese Co., PetSmart Charities, the band OK GO, and many others.

As a director and cinematographer, he’s currently in production for a feature-length documentary, The Sensitives, about people who’ve developed a mysterious illness that causes debiliating reactions to common chemicals and devices, produced by Emmy-Award-winning producer David Hartstein.

Drew’s work as a director and cinematographer focuses on the relationships between characters and their (often changing) environments, and employs uniquely immersive cinematography to guide audiences past their expectations of conventional cinema.
